Vocabulary for Town of Pompeii

The Town of Pompeii Vocabulary

  1. prosperous – having great success or good fortune,; well to do; wealthy
  2. acre – a measure of land; 4,840 square yards
  3. pedestrian – one who goes on foot; one who walks; a walker
  4. chisel – a tool with sharp edges that one holds in his or her hand to cut or shape wood, stone, etc.
  5. stonemason – a person whose job is to build with stone, brick, etc.
  6. whitewash – a mixture of lime, chalk, water, etc. to make walls white
  7. amphitheater – a round or open oval building with rising rows of seats around an open spac e
  8. colonnade – a row of columns
  9. gladiator – a man, often a slave, who fought in an arena as a public show in ancient Rome
  10. stage (v.) – to present as on stage
  11. inhabitant – a person living in a certain time
  12. seaport – a port or harbor used by ocean ships
  13. province – a region, district, or division of a country or nation
  14. frontier – the border between two countries
  15. cargo – the load carried by a ship, truck, etc.
  16. flourish – to grow quickly, to thrive; to be at the peak of

Today has been a great day of productivity!  The majority of students completed the "venalicius" translation and moved on to the town of Pompeii.

Homework for Tonight
JHU and UMD - Complete the "Town of Pompeii" packet questions.  Remember to answer all 16 on a separate sheet of paper in complete sentences.   The packet is due Tuesday, May 3rd, but you will receive 2 extra credit points for turning it in complete on Monday, May 2nd. 

Vocabulary for the packet is in a separate post titled "Vocabulary for "Town of Pompeii."

ALL COHORTS - OPPORTUNITY FOR EXTRA CREDIT!!!

By Tuesday, May 3rd, bring in handwritten or typed notes written IN YOUR OWN WORDS about Pompeii.  Also, you must include the site or source  where you found your information. 
You will receive 1 extra credit point on your project for every 5 facts you discover about Pompeii that are not stated in our text.

Do not  print out an article from the Internet and hand that in.  Do not hit enter and try to space out an article to make it look like you wrote individual notes.  Do your own research, have fun, and earn a few extrra points for your effort.

It was great seeing everyone back today!  There was no new homework tonight, but there will a few really important assignments over the weekend and over the next few weeks.

There are several girls who need to make up the Stage III quiz.  If you are one of them, please make sure you take this homework-free opportunity to study until you are confident in the material.

See you tomorrow.  Remember, no more CV's!  We want to go skating!
